Prescription Dive Lenses for Diving Masks
Clear underwater vision is important for every diver. If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, choosing the right prescription diving mask can make your underwater experience much more comfortable and enjoyable.
At Mandamalta, we offer prescription dive masks and prescription lenses for diving masks, helping divers enjoy clearer vision underwater without having to rely on ordinary glasses.
What Are Prescription Dive Lenses?
Prescription dive lenses are specially designed lenses fitted into compatible diving masks to correct your vision underwater.
Just like prescription glasses, they can be made to suit different optical requirements, including short-sightedness (myopia) and long-sightedness (hyperopia).
A prescription diving mask allows you to see more clearly while diving, snorkelling or swimming, making it easier to read your dive computer, gauges and equipment and to enjoy the underwater environment.
Who Needs a Prescription Diving Mask?
Prescription diving masks are ideal for divers who normally wear glasses or contact lenses and need vision correction underwater.
They can be particularly useful if you:
- Are short-sighted or long-sighted
- Have difficulty seeing clearly underwater
- Find it difficult to read your dive computer or pressure gauge
- Prefer not to wear contact lenses while diving
- Want clearer vision while scuba diving or snorkelling
- Want a more comfortable alternative to trying to see underwater without vision correction
For many divers, having the correct prescription can make a significant difference to their overall diving experience.
How Do Prescription Diving Lenses Work?
A diving mask creates an air space between your eyes and the water. Prescription lenses fitted into the mask correct your vision within this air space, allowing you to see more clearly underwater.
Depending on the mask and prescription available, different lens options may be possible.
Prescription lenses are normally selected according to your optical prescription and the compatible diving mask model.
Can I Get Prescription Lenses for My Diving Mask?
This depends on the specific mask model and the type of prescription required.
Some diving masks are designed to accept interchangeable prescription lenses, while others may have specific prescription lens options available.
If you already own a diving mask and are interested in prescription lenses, it is important to check whether prescription lenses are available and compatible with that particular model.
If you are purchasing a new mask, we can help you choose a suitable model for prescription use.
Prescription Lenses for Short-Sighted Divers
Short-sightedness, also known as myopia, means that objects in the distance may appear blurred.
Prescription diving lenses can be used to correct short-sightedness and provide clearer vision while diving.
If you are short-sighted, the required prescription will depend on your individual optical prescription and the available lens options for the selected diving mask.
Prescription Lenses for Long-Sighted Divers
Long-sightedness, also known as hyperopia, can make close objects more difficult to see clearly.
Prescription diving lenses can also be available for long-sighted divers, depending on the mask and lens system.
This can be particularly useful for divers who want to read their dive computer, pressure gauge or other underwater instruments more easily.
Can I Use Contact Lenses Instead?
Some divers choose to wear contact lenses while diving. However, prescription diving masks can be an alternative for people who prefer not to use contact lenses.
A prescription mask also means that your vision correction is incorporated directly into the diving mask.
The best option depends on your personal preference and your individual optical requirements.
How Do I Choose the Right Prescription Dive Mask?
Choosing the right prescription diving mask involves more than simply selecting a lens power.
You should consider:
1. Your optical prescription
Your current prescription is important when selecting the appropriate lenses.
2. The diving mask
Not every diving mask is available with prescription lenses. The mask must be compatible with the required prescription lens system.
3. Mask fit
A good seal and comfortable fit are essential for any diving mask. The mask should sit correctly on your face without excessive pressure or discomfort.
4. Lens requirements
Depending on your prescription, different lens powers or configurations may be available.
5. Your diving needs
Consider whether the mask will mainly be used for scuba diving, snorkelling, recreational diving or other underwater activities.
Prescription Dive Masks for Scuba Diving and Snorkelling
Prescription diving masks can be useful for both scuba diving and snorkelling.
For scuba divers, clearer vision can make it easier to see:
- Dive computers
- Pressure gauges
- Other diving instruments
- Your dive equipment
- Your buddy and other divers
- Underwater marine life
For snorkelers, prescription lenses can provide clearer vision while exploring the underwater environment.
Why Clear Vision Is Important Underwater
Underwater, vision is already different from what you experience on land. A diving mask creates an air space in front of your eyes, changing the way objects appear.
If your eyesight is not corrected, distant objects and important details may appear blurred.
A properly selected prescription diving mask can help you see more clearly and make your time underwater more enjoyable.
